Plastics Processing : Thermoforming

Thermoforming is another course of plastic processing. The entire procedure revolves around heating plastic sheets or other material in order to meet the desired shape. This process is more commonly used to generate molds of desired shape. With the aid of vacuum pump, the heated material is stretched upon mold so as to change its shape.

There are numerous ways in which this process could be achieved. Vacuum forming (use of vacuum to stretch heated material), pressure forming (elongating the heated solid through high pressure applied directly to material), twin sheet forming (two plastic sheets are melted and stretched at the same time) and in-line forming (Applying pressure with the help of a box in order to quicken the plastic processing).

There are various types of molds which could be used to achieve the desired shape with the help of thermoforming machine. First of all, a plaster of Paris mold could be used when plastic sheet is elongated. The use of plastic mold is very common as well. With the help of thermoforming, molds could be made and afterwards, other plastic materials could be molded in similar shapes.

Other than this, the use of wood molds is very common in industrial section. All of these molds give different products varying in efficiency and effectiveness. Different tools are used to achieve plastic processing which includes pressure box and vacuum. The basic purpose of all these tools is to heat and stretch plastic sheets so that mold could be injected into them.
